As children, my brother, sister and me enjoyed nothing more than going to the zoo. Luckily we grew up just a few blocks away from the Zoo in Leipzig, Saxony – so the easiest way for my parents to keep us happy and calm was to visit the zoo with us once a week. Since then Leipzig Zoo changed enormously and evolved to be one of Europe’s leading Zoos.
This project is kind of a childhood dream come true for me. After every visit to the zoo as a kid, I made drawings of everything I saw and learned in the zoo that day. The countless books about animals and nature, which my parents provided us with, helped a lot of course. In those days I was dreaming about how it would feel like, having a drawing of mine in one of those books or even on one of the enclosures in the zoo. I tell you what: dreaming works, if you really, really want something: Voilá – my Illustration for the new Budgerigar aviary in Leipzig Zoo. You can take a walk through this huge enclosure, while Budgies chirp and twitter and rush around your head like blue-yellow-green flashes!
My design shows an illustration of both a blue-and-white and a green-and-yellow budgerigar. Both the birds and the words “Wellensittich-Oase” (Budgerigar-Oasis) I drew in Procreat on my IPad Pro. One of my first attempts of handlettering on this device! And I love how the Budgerigars came out in Procreate. I was so surprised what this device and the app are capable of. If I take a look at the result now, Its still hard for me to believe, this was NOT painted by hand by myself! And I painted A LOT OF BIRDS for my underground station project Berlin Hermannstraße! For the background i sticked with the architectural design of the enclosure, which stays in a rather clean and almost minimal look. So I chose a photograph of a pinewood panel, adjusting the color to the wood used in the building. Its hard to tell this part is just an image and not real wood even when your’e standing directly in front of it!
