Billy Porter, the actor from the Netflix-series “Pose” arrived at the red carpet of this years Acacemy Awards Ceremony in a classical cut smoking jacket made from black velvet – combined with a dress made from the same fabric in sheer imperial dimensions. A breathtaking combination from George Lazenbys James Bond and Empress Maria Theresia.
The Internet exploded with no insta-facebook-timeline WITHOUT a post about him.
It’s not the first time that a man on a red carpet appears in anything but a dark smoking. And of course this look is based on Marc Jacobs appearances wearing skirts – however he is pushing this gesture a huge step forward and even trumps Jacobs pink polo-dress.
I felt alive. I felt free. And open, and radiant. And beautiful!
The question is not “What has he done with that outfit?” but rather what HASN’T he done with his outfit choice!
Let us note:
- he wasn’t wearing any Make-up
- there was no wig
- no color but black
- and by that means not serving any cliché !
What I want to say with that is: it wasn’t a drag-act – he didn’t hide behind a mask, but showed his very self. He showed an attitude that represented confidence, self-esteem, fearlessness and pride. And that in the merciless world of Hollywood, where image and appearance is everything.
We all have to deal and fight with conventions of society again and again – no matter if man, woman, gay, straight or of which skin color or origin. This dress is a reminder to us, that the greatest luck is to be ourselves. Without any fear of nothing and no one – not even of ourselves.
